At Dread or Dead Surf School, our story began more than 25 years ago, and it’s built on passion, local roots, and a shared love for the ocean.

Today, we’d like to introduce you to the heart of our surf family — Russell, Matthew, Axe, and Tai, the instructors who have shaped Surf Camp Barbados into what it is today.

I would like to admit that ....I was nervous. Surfing in Barbados sounded amazing, but I wasn’t exactly what you'd call “ocean confident.” I had visions of wiping out in front of cool locals while a bored surf instructor judged me from the shore. So when I booked a lesson with Dread or Dead, I was hopeful but cautious. The First Paddle-Out From the moment I met my instructor, I knew this would be different. He asked me about my swimming ability, my comfort in the ocean, and whether I’d ever even stood on a board. I said, “Nope. Unless balancing on a yoga mat counts.” He just smiled. “Perfect. Then we start from there.” No pressure. No eye-rolls. Just encouragement. Falling Without Failing I fell off the board a lot. Like, splash-after-splash levels of falling. Let me paint a picture: I had just landed in Barbados, surfboard-less but confident. I figured I’d rent a board, hit the waves, and have an epic surf trip. I mean, how hard could it be? Turns out, harder than I thought especially when you rent the wrong board from the wrong shop. This is the story of how I wasted a perfect surf day, almost lost my surfing mojo, and then found the one shop that made it all right again: Dread or Dead, the true MVP of surfboard rentals in Barbados. The Board That Looked Cool (But Wasn’t) I arrived in Barbados all pumped up, headed straight to the nearest surf shop, and picked a board based on... well, looks.
