How I Knew I’d Picked the Right Surf School (Hint: They Were Actually Patient)

I would like to admit that ....I was nervous. Surfing in Barbados sounded amazing, but I wasn’t exactly what you'd call “ocean confident.” I had visions of wiping out in front of cool locals while a bored surf instructor judged me from the shore.

So when I booked a lesson with Dread or Dead, I was hopeful but cautious.

The First Paddle-Out

From the moment I met my instructor, I knew this would be different. He asked me about my swimming ability, my comfort in the ocean, and whether I’d ever even stood on a board. I said, “Nope. Unless balancing on a yoga mat counts.”

He just smiled. “Perfect. Then we start from there.”

No pressure. No eye-rolls. Just encouragement.

Falling Without Failing

I fell off the board a lot. Like, splash-after-splash levels of falling. But instead of groans or sighs, my instructor laughed with me and said, “That’s progress. Next wave, let’s fix your stance.”

Every wipeout came with feedback, not frustration.

And then, somewhere in the middle of the lesson, I actually caught a wave. I rode it all the way in. And I stood up. On my own. The feeling? Unreal.

Why It Mattered

I’ve taken classes in other places where I felt rushed, embarrassed, or just ignored. This was the opposite. I felt seen. Supported. Like my instructor actually cared whether I stood up or not....not because it looked good on him, but because he knew I could do it.

That kind of teaching sticks with you.

My Verdict?

Dread or Dead wasn’t just the best surf school in Barbados I found they were the best teaching experience I’ve ever had. Period.

No pressure. Just honest coaching, good vibes, and patient people who make you believe you can surf. And then they prove it by helping you do it.

If you want a surf school that meets you where you are and lifts you higher, go straight to Dread or Dead. Expert coaching, kind hearts, and unforgettable waves.
