How I Knew I’d Picked the Right Surf School (Hint: They Were Actually Patient)

I would like to admit that ....I was nervous. Surfing in Barbados sounded amazing, but I wasn’t exactly what you'd call “ocean confident.” I had visions of wiping out in front of cool locals while a bored surf instructor judged me from the shore. So when I booked a lesson with Dread or Dead, I was hopeful but cautious. The First Paddle-Out From the moment I met my instructor, I knew this would be different. He asked me about my swimming ability, my comfort in the ocean, and whether I’d ever even stood on a board. I said, “Nope. Unless balancing on a yoga mat counts.” He just smiled. “Perfect. Then we start from there.” No pressure. No eye-rolls. Just encouragement. Falling Without Failing I fell off the board a lot. Like, splash-after-splash levels of falling. But instead of groans or sighs, my instructor laughed with me and said, “That’s progress. Next wave, let’s fix your stance.” Every wipeout came with feedback, not frustration.
