I Was Scared of Wiping Out—Now I Can’t Stop Surfing

Let’s get something out of the way: I am not what you'd call a “natural surfer”. In fact, before I took beginner surf lessons in Barbados, I was terrified of wiping out. I imagined dramatic tumbles, my board flipping into the sky, sea turtles laughing at me.

But here I am, three lessons in, and I already check the surf report like it’s my morning coffee. So, how did I go from scared to surf-obsessed?

Day One: Panic Mode

When I arrived at Dread or Dead Surf School, I was already sweating and not from the sun. I looked at the ocean like it was a giant blue prank waiting to dunk me. But then, I met my instructor.

He smiled like he’d seen this a hundred times before (spoiler: he had). “It’s okay,” he said. “Everyone’s scared at first. You’re here; that’s the hardest part.”

🏖️ Sand, Stretch, Stand

We started on the sand. No rushing. Just stretching, balancing on the board, and laughing at how weird it feels to “pop up” on land. It felt like a beach version of yoga meets hopscotch. I could do that.

Then we walked into the water… and everything changed.

🌊 First Wave: Face Plant

My first wave? A total disaster. I paddled like a confused seal and face-planted immediately. But you know what? It didn’t hurt. It wasn’t scary. It was…kind of funny.

The instructor high-fived me. “You’re surfing now,” he said, “because you’re trying.”

That one sentence erased my fear. It wasn’t about looking cool. It was about trying again.

🙌 Second Wave: I Stood Up (For Two Seconds)

The second time, I actually stood up. For maybe two glorious seconds, I felt like Poseidon. The ocean, the breeze, the freedom – it was unreal.

Then I fell. Again. But I was laughing. And I didn’t want to stop.

🐢 Now I Surf, and I’m Still Learning

Since that first day, I’ve come back for more lessons. I still fall, but I also ride waves now. I recognise fish under my board. I wave to strangers who are also learning. And I walk off the beach every time with sandy toes and the world’s biggest grin.

🏄‍♀️ What Helped?

• Patient, hilarious instructors

• Soft boards that don’t hurt when you fall

• Easy waves made for beginners

• No judgement. Just stoke.

💬 Final Thought

If you're afraid of trying surfing, good. That means you care. Just know that fear doesn’t stand a chance against the kindness and encouragement you’ll get from the folks at Dread or Dead. They made learning easy, safe, and fun. And now? I can’t imagine life without a surfboard.
